Home and Business Security Fences: Buying, Maintaining and Improving

Welcome to my blog on fences. My name is Penny, and a few years ago, my business was broken into. Luckily, no one was there so no one was hurt, but it made my personal sense of security feel threatened, and there was a lot of property damage. As a result of that experience, I have spent a lot of time researching safety methods. I have learned about everything from locks to fences, but I plan to focus on the latter in this space. I hope these posts and ideas help you, your family and your business to be more protected.

What Is the Best Pool Fencing for Your Home?

by Rosa Soler

If your home has a pool, it probably needs a fence; these are usually legally required around any yard with a pool, or at least around the pool itself, to keep out children and wildlife. This may be true even if you have an above-ground pool or a simple wading pool; even some water features may be considered pools, and the law may require fences around them! Once you've determined the legal requirements for a fence around your pool, note a few tips to help you choose the best type and style for your home so you know you'll find pool fencing that works for your needs in particular.

Pets

When deciding on a style of fence for your pool, you need to consider more than just the pool itself. For example, if you have pets, they may scratch and dig around a solid wood fence, causing damage. A mesh or chain link fence may allow them to get distracted by neighbours and passersby, so dogs will bark more often and cats may try to chase other animals. A solid vinyl fence can block their view and be durable against scratching and other such damage.

Security

If you need added security against trespassers, a metal bar fence with pointed finials is often the best. The bars are difficult to climb, and the sharp, pointed finials will deter anyone from scaling the fence.

Aesthetics

Matching a fence to your outdoor decor can be difficult, as a fence often becomes a focal point itself and can easily crowd your yard or clash with patio pavers, a pergola, and other such features. If you can't decide on a metal or wood fence or on a colour that will coordinate with all your outdoor items, choose a glass fence. The glass won't clash with any colours on pavers or furniture, or with your home's exterior siding or brick. Frameless glass becomes virtually invisible, and you can plant vegetation in front of the glass to create a backyard oasis, without worrying if shrubbery or flower colours will coordinate with the fence itself.

View

When choosing a pool fence, don't overlook how it will affect your view of the property. An above-ground pool may already block your view of the horizon, so avoid a solid panel fence that can make your yard seem even more closed-in or create a cluttered look in the yard. A metal bar fence, mesh fence, or glass fence can still allow you a nice view of your surroundings and help keep an open feeling in your backyard space.
