Home and Business Security Fences: Buying, Maintaining and Improving

Welcome to my blog on fences. My name is Penny, and a few years ago, my business was broken into. Luckily, no one was there so no one was hurt, but it made my personal sense of security feel threatened, and there was a lot of property damage. As a result of that experience, I have spent a lot of time researching safety methods. I have learned about everything from locks to fences, but I plan to focus on the latter in this space. I hope these posts and ideas help you, your family and your business to be more protected.

How to Choose the Right Material for Your Home's Fence and Gate

by Rosa Soler

Your home's fence and gate are very important; they provide security and a boundary line between you and your neighbors, and can also enhance or detract from your home's overall curb appeal. The material you choose for your fence and gate is very important, as you want something durable but also want to consider its appearance and how easy it will be to maintain over the years. Note a few tips for choosing the right material for your home's fence and gate.

Wood

Wood fences provide privacy but they may need the most maintenance, as wood needs consistent sealing and painting over the years. You also need to inspect it for mold, mildew, and rot. However, one advantage of wood is that you may be able to fabricate your own fence more easily when you choose wood; if a plank or section does get damaged or moldy, you might be able to cut a new plank with your own tools and then easily remove the damaged plank, putting the new one in its place, without the help of a contractor.

Glass

Glass fences are good for pools when you want a clear view of children and guests, but that clear view also means no privacy from the neighbours! If you opt for a glass fence around your yard, you may need to consider adding landscaping or even an outdoor curtain or blind along the side that faces the neighbours.

Cyclone fencing

Cyclone or chain link fencing is very easy for a homeowner to install on their own but it offers little privacy and is easy to scale. If you want to add security, be sure to choose a tall chain link fence with tight mesh or weave so there is no toehold. You also need to consistently check it for rust and corrosion, even if you choose a fence with a coating to protect it, as the metal can easily corrode when exposed to the elements.

Wrought iron

Wrought iron has a very stately look, which might actually seem out of place in some neighborhoods. However, it's difficult to scale, especially when you choose pointed finials at the top, and is good when you have dogs that might dig at the bottom of the fence, as the wrought iron is strong against this type of damage. If not maintained properly, the gate of a wrought iron fence can get very squeaky as the hinges need to support the weight of the iron; the pieces may start to rub against each other and squeak. Be sure you understand how to maintain the gate properly so you avoid this irritation.
