Home and Business Security Fences: Buying, Maintaining and Improving

Welcome to my blog on fences. My name is Penny, and a few years ago, my business was broken into. Luckily, no one was there so no one was hurt, but it made my personal sense of security feel threatened, and there was a lot of property damage. As a result of that experience, I have spent a lot of time researching safety methods. I have learned about everything from locks to fences, but I plan to focus on the latter in this space. I hope these posts and ideas help you, your family and your business to be more protected.

How Can You Not Install A Chain-Link Fence?

by Rosa Soler

Homeowners often have different reasons why they wouldn't invest in a chain link fence.

Some of these reasons are based on conventional wisdom, which may not be factual or accurate. This article provides answers to three questions that address some common concerns that you may have if you're looking to invest in a chain-link fence.

How Can A Chain-Link Fence Be Made More Private?

Chain link fences are almost synonymous with a lack of privacy because of their "see-through" nature. Many homeowners opt for other types of fences because they cannot afford to settle for a cheaper fence at the expense of their privacy.

What such homeowners may not know is that they can improve the privacy of their chain-link fences at a lower cost than what it costs to install a different fencing option. One of the best ways to do this is to incorporate privacy slats into the design of the chain-link fence during installation. Privacy slats are often made of PVC or wood. Privacy slats are relatively affordable and a chain-link fence with slats is likely to cost less than the "more private" alternatives that you may have considered.

How Can A Chain Link Fence Be Made More Secure?

You may also have reservations about installing a chain link fence because you can easily climb over the fence yourself and it might be just as easy for an intruder to do the same.

Perhaps the best way to make it difficult for intruders to climb over a chain-link fence is to increase the height of the fence as much as possible. However, this may not suffice because local fencing regulations place restrictions on how high your fence can go.

Substituting the top rail on the fence with coil spring fencing wire should make the fence more secure. The top rail on a "short" chain-link fence offers a handhold that makes it easier to climb over the fence. Replacing this rail with coil spring wire will give intruders something to think about before they decide to jump over.

How Can A Chain-Link Fence Keep Your Dog Inside?

You might have reservations about installing a chain-link fence because your dog can easily escape from the compound by jumping over the fence or by digging under it. The coil spring wires mentioned above should make it difficult for the canine to jump over.

You can bury chicken wire at the bottom of the fence so that the wire pricks your dog's paws when he or she tries to dig under. This should keep your dog in and it should keep other digging animals (e.g. squirrels) out of your premises.
