Home and Business Security Fences: Buying, Maintaining and Improving

Welcome to my blog on fences. My name is Penny, and a few years ago, my business was broken into. Luckily, no one was there so no one was hurt, but it made my personal sense of security feel threatened, and there was a lot of property damage. As a result of that experience, I have spent a lot of time researching safety methods. I have learned about everything from locks to fences, but I plan to focus on the latter in this space. I hope these posts and ideas help you, your family and your business to be more protected.

4 Mistakes to Avoid When Installing Electric Fencing

by Rosa Soler

Electric fences are very good for keeping your farm animals within a restricted space. This is because the animals quickly learn to keep away from the fence in order to avoid electric shocks. However, some people fail to reap all the benefits of an electric fence as they make mistakes during the fence installation process. This article discusses some of the most common electric fence installation mistakes.

Using Very Small Wires

When you use very small wires for your electric fence, that fence will only carry a small electric charge. Such a small charge will be unable to deter your animals from breaching the fence. It is better for you to consult a fencing supplier so they can give you advice on the appropriate thickness of wires you should use depending on the animals you have.

Inadequate Earth Wire Grounding

You must be aware that the electric shock you suffer if you are stepping on a wet floor is more severe than if your feet were in rubber-soled shoes. This same principle applies to electric fences; if the earth wires or rods are not well grounded, the current flowing through the wires will not make a complete circuit into the ground so the resultant shocks will be weak. Employ an experienced fencing contractor to ground your earth rods appropriately.

Using Different Kinds of Metal

It is unwise to use different kinds of wires as you install the fence. For instance, if you join a copper wire to a steel wire then one of those metals will corrode due to electrolysis (the flow of current between those wires in the presence of moisture). Corrosion reduces the contact between those wires so the shocks produced will be weak. Use only one kind of wire as you install your electric fence.

Using an Inadequate Fence Charger

The charger (a device through which power is provided to the fence) you install should be appropriate to the size of the fence and the size of the animals you want to keep fenced in. For instance, sheep require a less intense charge than cattle due to the difference in the weight of those animals. The heavier the animal, the larger the capacity of the charger you will need. Read the installation manual of the electric fence charger so that you are sure it is the right one for the job.

Avoid making the mistakes above and your electric fence will serve its purpose effectively. If you lack the required skills to install the fence, hire a fence contractor to do it for you.
