Home and Business Security Fences: Buying, Maintaining and Improving

Welcome to my blog on fences. My name is Penny, and a few years ago, my business was broken into. Luckily, no one was there so no one was hurt, but it made my personal sense of security feel threatened, and there was a lot of property damage. As a result of that experience, I have spent a lot of time researching safety methods. I have learned about everything from locks to fences, but I plan to focus on the latter in this space. I hope these posts and ideas help you, your family and your business to be more protected.

Hot New Trends in Residential Fencing Materials

by Rosa Soler

A residential fence is much more than just a separation between properties; it can add or detract from the curb appeal of your home, and it may also increase your home's security and privacy. There are many options for homeowners today beyond the standard chain link or wood fences, and each of these options can offer their own unique advantages and benefits. If you need a new fence installed for your home, check out some of the hottest new trends in fencing material and why they're so popular with homeowners.

1. Poured concrete

Poured concrete is quickly becoming a favorite building material for homeowners, and it's used in a variety of ways, even for indoor flooring and countertops. One reason for this is that concrete can easily hold a paint or stain color, and it can be made to look like a variety of other materials including stone and slate, but at a fraction of the cost. This is why it's so popular for fences as well. Concrete can be poured and then shaped and molded to look like natural stone or brick. It can be easier to install than having to stack these materials by hand, making it a great choice for homeowners who want a high-end look, need a quick fence, and who may also be on a budget.

2. Metal fences

Metal fences offer the privacy of wood fences but are more durable, especially if your home has a pool. The water and chemicals in a pool can easily rot away a wood fence, but not a metal fence. A metal fence can also be powder-coated virtually any color, so you can keep it white for a crisp and clean look, or black for a sleek look, or any color that coordinates with your home's exterior. By having a metal fence powder-coated, you can have the durability and strength of metal without it seeming drab and industrial. If you choose a tall metal fence, it can also add to your property's security, as it may be very difficult to actually scale a metal fence without a ladder of some sort.

3. Recycled and reclaimed materials

For the very eco-conscious, recycled and reclaimed materials can be the right choice for fencing materials. Reclaimed wood from other projects can be cut for a wood fence, or even old railroad ties can be used to anchor a wire fence. Recycled or reclaimed metal pieces can be made into a metal fence, and pieces like copper and aluminum can be cut and then attached to anchors for a unique design. This keeps materials out of landfills and reduces the amount of virgin materials that need to be harvested for home fencing.
